My First Blog:

Where to Start?
Of Course — Where I Was Born
Welcome to Next Travel Point!

Hi, I’m Lily — your unofficial tour guide to places you never knew you had to visit. I’ve lived in several countries, traveled to over 20 more, and honestly, my suitcase deserves its own loyalty program.

This is my very first blog post, and where better to begin than the place that shaped me — Bosnia and Herzegovina. It’s not just my homeland; it’s one of Europe’s most underrated gems.

So let’s start where my story begins…

Bosnia & Herzegovina

The Bridge That Rebuilt Itself (Twice)

Bosnia is known for its dramatic landscapes, soul-soothing comfort food, and a kind of resilience that borders on poetic. If you want to step into a real-life fairytale with a plot twist, head to Mostar, where a stone bridge became a symbol of both destruction and rebirth.

🌉 Stari Most – The Bridge That Refused to Die

Built by the Ottomans in 1566, Stari Most (Old Bridge) arches gracefully over the Neretva River, connecting two sides of Mostar’s Old Town. For over 400 years, it stood as a masterpiece of Islamic architecture and unity.

Then came 1993. During the Bosnian War, the bridge was destroyed — its fall, captured on camera, broadcasted worldwide. It wasn’t just stone that crumbled, it was identity, history, and connection.

But Bosnia wasn’t finished.

In 2004, the bridge was rebuilt stone by stone using traditional Ottoman techniques and salvaged materials. Today, it’s not just a crossing — it’s a global symbol of resilience.

🤯 Why It’s Worth Seeing
  • UNESCO World Heritage Site

  • Watch locals dive 78 feet into the Neretva (some for tradition, some for tips)

  • It’s more than a monument — it’s a living cultural symbol

And yes, people cry when they cross it. Sometimes it’s the view. Sometimes it’s the baklava.

🍽️ What to Eat Near the Bridge

Enjoy the view with some local flavors:

  • Ćevapi – grilled beef bites in somun bread with onions and creamy kajmak

  • Begova Čorba – a thick, creamy chicken and okra stew from Ottoman times

  • Tufahija – a poached apple stuffed with walnuts and sugar (and probably love)

Wash it down with strong Bosnian coffee served in a copper džezva — and try not to get emotional. We dare you.

🔍 Hidden Gem Nearby: Blagaj Tekke

Just a 20-minute drive from Mostar lies Blagaj Tekke, a 600-year-old Sufi monastery built into a cliffside next to the Buna River spring. Peaceful, spiritual, and photogenic enough to make your phone storage panic.

🧭 Travel Tips
  • Mostar is a 2.5-hour drive from Sarajevo or Dubrovnik

  • Avoid visiting at midday in summer — the stone heats up like a pizza oven

  • Bridge diving is a thing — but leave it to the locals

  • Currency: Convertible Marka (BAM), though euros and smiles go far

💸 Budget vs. Luxury

Budget:
Street food, local hostels, and a full Balkan feast under $10.

Luxury:
Book a riverside boutique hotel or traditional guesthouse with Old Bridge views and call it your “healing era.”

🤓 Fun Fact

The reconstructed Stari Most includes original limestone blocks recovered from the river and local quarries — like historical puzzle pieces reassembled for the future Stari Most isn’t just a bridge — it’s a comeback story, a cultural icon, and one of the most emotional travel experiences you’ll ever have. If bridges could talk, this one would say:
“Still here. Still standing. Still beautiful.”

➕ 4 Hidden Gems You’ll Love

1. Blagaj Tekke

A 16th-century Dervish monastery built into a cliff, right at the source of the Buna River. Peaceful, mystical, and Instagram gold.
The turquoise water is so clear it feels unreal, and the surrounding silence is almost spiritual. Don’t forget to take a boat ride right into the cave where the river emerges.

2. Kravice Waterfalls

Bosnia’s best-kept natural secret. A jungle-like waterfall perfect for summer swims, with shallow pools, picnic spots, and family-friendly vibes.
The sound of cascading water and chirping birds is nature’s perfect playlist. Rent a paddleboard or just float — either way, it’s pure bliss
.

3. Višegrad & The Bridge on the Drina.

Our third hidden gem takes us east, to the town of Višegrad (it means, more than a city)
Here you’ll find the stunning Mehmed Paša Sokolović Bridge, built in the 16th century by the Ottomans. With its 11 graceful arches stretching across the emerald Drina River, this masterpiece was designed by the legendary architect Mimar Sinan.

But this isn’t just a bridge — it’s a storybook. The Nobel Prize-winning writer Ivo Andrić made it famous in his novel The Bridge on the Drina, where it became a symbol of centuries of history, struggle, and resilience in the Balkans.

Stand here and you’ll feel it — the weight of time, the echoes of generations who crossed it, and the beauty of endurance."

4. Inat Kuća – The House That Said “No”

A story as stubborn as it is symbolic. When the Austro-Hungarians planned to build Sarajevo’s City Hall, one man refused to sell his house — unless it was moved, brick by brick, across the river. They did just that, and today it stands proudly as Inat Kuća ("House of Spite").
Now a traditional restaurant, it's more than a place to eat — it’s a cheeky reminder that Bosnians don’t give up easily.
Its windows still stare directly at the City Hall, as if it’s keeping an eye on history. Order the dolma and raise a glass to good food and great resistance.
Stubborn? Maybe. Iconic? Absolutely
